Galati and Liver Specialists of Texas are pleased to announce the start of a new investigational study for patients with hepatitis C. The study, sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Tibotec, will be studying their new drug VX-950, which has a commercial name of Telaprevir. This is a drug in the class of protease inhibitors, a potent class of drugs the prevent the replication (reproduction) of the hepatitis C virus. This study, that goes by the name of REALIZE , is testing the effect of VX-950 in patients with hepatitis C previously treated with peginterferon and ribavirin, who were non-responders to the therapy previously. The goal of this research study is to show that the addition of VX-950 to the combination of pegintron and ribavirin will result in an increase in the clearing of the virus in this difficult to treat population of patients. Starting in October 2008, patients will be screened to see if they qualify to participate in the study.
