Dr. Joseph Galati

Dr. Joseph S. Galati is a native of Long Island, New York. He received his undergraduate degree at Syracuse University and attended St. George's University School of Medicine.

Following medical school, Dr. Galati was an Intern and Resident in Internal Medicine at State University of New York Health Science Center-Brooklyn (formerly Downstate Medical Center)/Kings County Hospital Center, one of the premier teaching hospitals in the country. He remained an additional year in the department to assume responsibilities as the Chief Medical Resident in the Department of Medicine under the direction of Dr. Donald E. Wilson, currently the Dean at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Wanting to pursue further training and expertise in Liver Disease/Transplant Medicine, Dr. Galati left New York City for Omaha, Nebraska. He performed his fellowship training in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Transplant Medicine at University of Nebraska Medical Center. University of Nebraska Medical Center is a world renowned liver program, and today remains one of the finest in the country. During Dr. Galati’s training there, he participated in a number of research studies looking at the gastrointestinal complications of liver disease and cirrhosis.

After completion of his fellowship training, Dr. Galati relocated to Houston, Texas where he joined Drs. Monsour, Wood and Ozaki (who were also at University of Nebraska) at University of Texas Medical School-Houston. In 1996, he became Medical Director of Transplant Hepatology at University of Texas Medical School. In the spring of 1999, Dr. Galati left his full-time position at University of Texas Medical School to form a private practice with most of his University colleagues. In addition, he was named Medical Director of the newly formed St. Luke’s Texas Liver Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, Houston, Texas. In the spring of 2001, he formed his current practice, Liver Specialists of Texas, one of America’s largest private liver services.

In 2007, Dr. Galati was appointed the Medical Director for the Center of Liver Disease and Transplantation at The Methodist Hospital, Houston Texas. The Methodist Hospital is one of the countries top facilities, ranked by US News and World Report as one of America’s Top Hospital years after year.

Dr. Galati is President of the Texas International Endoscopy Center, a state of the art endoscopy facility where gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures are performed by Texas Medical Center physicians.

Liver Specialists of Texas,  Dr. Galati's practice, is devoted to the care of patients with both acute and chronic liver disease, as well as individuals with disorders of the digestive tract. The majority of his referrals are for patients with chronic type C hepatitis -- most of which have previously failed some form of therapy or have now developed complications. He is conducting research in several areas of liver disease, including the effect of liver disease on the function of the stomach and intestines as well as viral hepatitis in collaboration with other colleagues nationally and internationally.

Currently, Research Specialists of Texas, the clinical research arm of the practice, is conduction numerous research studies on several new compounds targeting the hepatitis C virus. Contact the office for further details, and the opportunity to participate.

Dr. Galati has been an invited speaker both nationally and internationally, having lectured in Latin America, Europe, and Asia. He is also a founding board member of the Texas Liver Coalition, a non-profit organization whose mission it is to provide education and support to those with all types of liver disease.

For the past seven years, Dr. Galati has been working with Clear Channel Radio, creating consumer oriented radio programming, covering topics of health and wellness. The Radio Medical Minute is aired every Monday morning on NewsRadio 740 am KTRH in Houston, one of the countries premier 50,000 watt radio stations. In addition, Dr. Galati produces and hosts Your Health First, a weekly one-hour radio program heard on Clear Channel’s 740 am KTRH every Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Every week, Dr. Galati reviews current health issues in the news, and has experts from around the country joining him to discuss, in simple to understand language, the recent breakthroughs in research and preventive medicine. The web site for the program, www.yourhealthfirst.com , contains past audio files and health related information from past programs.

When not practicing medicine, Dr. Galati is an avid photographer, currently completing his latest project, “Great Hands of Texas”, a collection of hand photographs of some of Texas’s greatest living legends. Many of these photographs are proudly displayed in the office. Dr. Galati is active in the City of Houston and Fort Bend County communities, volunteering time to several worthwhile organizations, including St. Laurence Catholic Church and School, First Colony Little League, and First Colony Dream League

I have been on HCV therapy in the past when you drew interferon out of a vial...giving away may age here. I discontinued therapy due to the side effects. After an open gallbladder removal at St.Lukes my surgeon Dr. Wood commented he had completed the liver biopsy that I requested and that I had early stage cirrhosis. I began treatment with a liver specialist (I won't reveal the name) and found his staff rude and uncaring. I would drive three hours for an appointment or procedure only to find it

Thank you for your recent videos on Hep C. I saw that part 1 of one series was posted, but could not find parts 2-4. Are these still in production? I am currently in the middle of treatment, with a significantly reduced (though not null) viral load at 12 weeks. Regarding Victrelis-Telaprevir: As I understand it, the dosage regimen for these drugs is strict, involving 8-hour cue dosing or dosing every 7-9 hours, and missed doses may cause resistance. How valid are these concerns?
