Podcast: Normal Liver Enzymes in Fatty Liver Disease Still A Danger

Fatty liver disease remains a very big public health problem for all of us. This podcast reviewes a recent article in the journal Hepatology that discusses the impact of normal liver enzymes on the progression of fatty liver. Their findings suggest that patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, who have normal liver enzymes, remain at risk for disease progression. It does not appear that having normal enzymes protects you from further damage. Additionally, having signs of insulin resistance and alterations in glucose metabolism (such as pre-diabetes) is equally alarming, and puts one at risk for further liver damage.

All of these patients should have a liver biopsy performed to evaluate the degree of damage.
